English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
The English for Speakers of Other Languages/English as a Second Language (ESOL/ESL) program provides courses that enable adults to acquire English-language proficiency. Through a curriculum that integrates life-skills content with language functions and relevant grammar, students learn to use English to achieve their goals and to employ critical-thinking skills to transfer the classroom experience to daily life.
This competency-based program offers six levels of general language skills plus additional courses for specific needs. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) adult centers use Florida’s Standardized Student Syllabi; placement of students into the ESOL programs is done by using the appropriate placement test.
ESOL teachers at M-DCPS Adult Centers are certified and have many years of experience. In addition, they all receive regular training in effective ESOL teaching methods. The program is offered at approximately 20 main locations throughout Miami-Dade County. Some of our schools feature innovative ESOL computer labs, where students can work individually on improving their ESOL skills, including pronunciation and vocabulary.
